Bancha

Japanese Post-Harvest Green Tea

Overview

Bancha (番茶) is a Japanese green tea harvested later in the season, typically from summer to autumn. The name means "ordinary tea" reflecting its status as an everyday, practical tea rather than a premium variety.

Despite being considered a lower grade than Sencha, Bancha has its own devoted following. It offers a milder, less bitter flavor and significantly lower caffeine content, making it suitable for evening consumption.

  • • Coarser, larger leaves

Production

Bancha is produced similarly to Sencha - plucked, steamed, rolled, and dried. However, it's harvested later when the leaves are more mature, resulting in different characteristics. The later harvest means less investment in the crop, making Bancha an affordable everyday tea.
